We are delighted to invite you to the grand opening of Triton & Shell – Paper Art Hub, a new multispace dedicated to the art and history of paper. During this first event, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the inaugural exhibition titled “Handmade Paper from Asia to Europe.”

Triton & Shell is the first non-profit organization in Greece exclusively dedicated to handmade paper and the book. Its mission is to safeguard, document, and promote the cultural significance of paper, offering a vibrant meeting point for artists, visual creators, publishers, photographers, printmakers, conservators, researchers, and paper enthusiasts.

The venue includes an exhibition space, an archive and library with over 2,000 book titles and artifacts from around the world, as well as workshops for handmade paper production, bookbinding, and conservation.
We are honored to house part of the equipment and archives of notable creators, including the bookbinders Evangelia Biza and Antonis Koutsouradis, and the papermakers Peter & Donna Thomas and Peter Gentenaar.

The Exhibition

The exhibition “Handmade Paper from Asia to Europe” traces the journey and evolution of paper — from its birthplace in 1st-century China, to the first European papermaking workshops in the 13th century, and up to the early 20th century.

Through carefully selected objects from the archive, the exhibition highlights the techniques, cultural significance, and enduring appeal of a material that became the foundation of human communication.

Highlights include:

  • The book Kamisuki Mura Kurotani (1970), awarded “The Most Beautiful Book in the World” at the Frankfurt International Book Fair (1972),
  • Papermaking moulds from Asia, Europe, and America,
  • Prints from the 18th to the 20th century depicting the stages and evolution of handmade papermaking.

Through the exhibition, you will travel back to a time when each sheet of paper was made by hand and served as the sole medium for recording knowledge, long before technology reduced paper to a mere wrapper.

The exhibition is open to the public every Wednesday from 10:00 to 14:00 and every Friday from 17:00 to 20:00.
Admission is free.
